FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How will I receive timely information about the garden?

E-mail is our preferred method of reaching you. We use the e-mail address that you supplied to Saco Parks and Rec when you registered for the garden. If this is not the best address/way to contact you, please let us know here:

E-mail us

When can I plant my garden?

Seasonal gardening generally begins on May 15 each year, depending on soil conditions. The  water is usually turned on at around that time.

When must I plant my garden?

Seasonal gardens must be started by June 15. After that date, the plot will be offered to the first person on the waiting list.

What if I've rented a plot, but can no longer garden?

If this happens, please let us know so that we can assign the plot to someone else. Unfortunately, we cannot refund your garden fee.

Can I move the stakes on the corners of my plot?

No, the stakes mark the border of the plots and also major pathways, which are wide enough to allow easy wheelbarrow and water hose access. Please do not remove these stakes or expand your garden into pathways or beyond the outside perimeter.

Who maintains the walkways?

Paths and perimeters (around all sides of plots) are the responsibility of each renter. They must be kept clear. Sweeping the walkways does not count toward service hours.

Can I use the stuff in the shed?

Yes, all items in the shed are available to all gardeners. This includes items left by other gardeners. These items may also be disposed of  by the Steering Committee.

What if there's a problem with the hoses or other equipment?

Please let us know as soon as possible so that we can fix the problem.

Can I pick vegetables or flowers from other gardens?

NO, unless a gardener gives you permission to pick from their garden.

Are pets allowed in the Garden?

Only Service Animals are allowed in the Garden

Is smoking allowed in the Garden?

Smoking is not allowed in the garden or on any other Saco Parks and Recreation sites.

What do I do with trash in the Garden?

The Garden has a carry in/carry out policy for trash.

Who closes and locks the gate?

The gate must be closed and locked whenever there is no one in the garden. When you leave the garden, please look around to see if anyone else is there.

If no one is still in the garden, lock the gate.

It's good practice to greet other gardeners when you enter the garden, and to let them know when you leave.

When does gardening end for the season?

Seasonal gardens must be cleared by dusk on the first Sunday in November.

What does it mean to be a "Gardener in Good Standing"?

Gardeners in good standing keep their plot weeded and tidy, have completed at least two hours of Garden service work, and clear their seasonal plot by dusk on the first Sunday in November. Gardeners must be in good standing at the end of the season to register for the next season.

Where can I find the SCG Bylaws and Guidelines?

The link to the Bylaws and Guidelines is here

Who do I contact about problems in the Garden?

Feel free to contact us via e-mail, or call or text the Steering Committee chair, Peg Mills at 207-283-1025
